General Chemistry 121 Syllabus
ExamStats for General Chemistry 121 (section 1 & section 2): Here are the (a) regular format final exam (average 8am class 83.11, 9 am class 78.72. (b) ACS adjusted final exam (average 8am class 79.83, 9 am class = 78.38) (c) Final Grade (average 8am class = 84.57, 9 am class 83.87) Yes indeed your grade was calculated exactly as stated in my syllabus. Your ACS final exam grade was indeed included in the final grade as stated (Although I noticed that some of you did not take the ACS exam seriously - as if it would not be a part of your grade. I don't quite understand how some of you went from thinking that you were going to get an F on the class because of the ACS exam to thinking that the ACS exam did not count at all.) - although if I had used the raw ACS exam scores, the average would have been around a D/F on the ACS exam. The clicker grades were also adjusted because of the number of people who missed a lot of classes to an average of (8am class 84%, 9 am class 82.72%). When I was compiling your final grades, I was kind of surprised by the number of people who lost points unnecessarily by not doing the clickers (by missing a lot of class attendance) and the number of people with decent grades who lost lots of points because they missed taking almost all of their quizzes. A few people also missed taking one of their final exams and went to the wrong time for the final exam. The 2 final exam was on the syllabus. The exam dates were announced at least 2 times every class period for about 2 weeks prior to the exams. A few students thought that I did not assign homework problems when they were assigned at the beginning of every new chapter in class and posted online. (The HW was not graded - answer are in the book & a complete answer book with all worked questions was also sold at the bookstore. It would have also taken at least 100 solid hours of homework grading every chapter if the homework was actually graded with partial credit rather than if they were just checked off if something was submitted for the 200 students in class.) The grades were assigned fairly similarly to the way that the grades were assigned for the Midterm Grades. (90% & above A, 80% & above B, etc.)
I will allow you to look at your actual ACS exam (if you feel that you did better than your grades came out) but you will not be able to walk off with your ACS exam answer sheet or with a copy of it because of rules about ACS exam security (since the same exam is used all over the country for years). I returned the graded regular format final exam during the ACS final exam (on 12/13T). You can also still request that I email you all your grades. Just keep in mind that if I email you your grades, emails are not a secure connection so someone other than yourself may see your grades during transmission. You are also welcome to come look at any exams that you have not yet picked up and ask me exactly how the grades were calculated. You are even welcome to ask me (grill me about the grades) next semester and if I did make a mistake in your grading, I absolutely will change your grade (following the rules about grading corrections as stated in my syllabus).

General Chemistry Quiz I Here are the answer sheets and blank forms for Quiz I for both sections. posted 9/7/11 at 4:30 pm from Dr. Hahn's office. You might want to look at the answer key and see what mistakes you may have made on the quiz.
General Chemistry Quiz II: Here are the answer sheets and blank form for Quiz II for both sections. Sorry about the delay but my old laptop is limping along and my acrobat document creator wasn't working right on my new laptop. Please remember that the exam on 9/21 W will cover all of Chapter 1, all of Chapter 2 and parts of Chapter 3 [ (a) balancing equation (b) calculating molecular weights (c) % composition] posted 9/16/11 at 8:45 am from Dr. Hahn's home.
Clicker Questions Here are the clicker questions and the answer. Answers have the * by the answer.
To study for the exam, please make sure that you understand everything on the quizzes and the clicker questions. I may change a MC type question on a quiz to a LA question and visa versa. You will not get the exact same question on an exam that you got on a quiz. I said at the beginning of the semester that the exams and quizzes will be approximately 25 to 30 % long answer in points and I expect that this will be the case. It will probably be a little toward lesser LA points because the chapters are not full of things that I can put in the form of a long answer question. This exam will cover Chapter 1, Chapter 2 and Chapter 3 (balancing equations and calculating molecular weight) - I ran out of time and did not cover % composition in time for this exam. Please bring a calculator to this exam. You will be provided with a periodic table.
In general for LA questions, the more work you show, the more likely it is that you will get partial credit. I will honor every statement that I gave during class about what you do and do not need to memorize. (example - Should know polyatomic ions which I asked you to memorize. Only need to know charges for main group elements IA, IIA, IIIA, VIA, VIIA. (reasoning: when we do electron configuration, you will be able to figure out charges for transition metals without memorizing it and you already have a lot to memorize for this exam.) Good luck studying for the exam. (PS I don't know what you are covering in labs and recitations so I am not doing some Machiavellian background activity to cheat you out of a good grade.) I will also grade every exam and quiz so if there is a mistake in grading, it is my mistake and I cannot blame anyone else.
Please write legibly - I cannot grade what I cannot read. Please follow exam directions. I am grading approximately 200 quizzes and exams - it takes me a good 2 hours to just get your quizzes in the correct order to hand out in class so please do no make it hard for me to grade by not following direction. For example: This weekend while grading your quizzes, I had to write your names on the back of the quizzes and "people could not find quizzes without name" on some 150 quizzes. Sort of like writing 150 times "I will not talk in class". Your names have to be on the back of the quizzes because of FERPA (a federal law which prohibits disclosing student grades to other people). Actually I used those points to even out the quiz points (because I gave the stuff which I covered in class immediately before the quiz as extra credit points) and I actually thought that you would all get the "name" points.

General Chemistry Exam I Here is your Exam I answer keys and blank forms for all forms of the exam. I am finished grading but I have not yet added up all your points yet so I don't know yet how you did. However I should have them all complete by Monday. They will be handed out in the normal way by first letter of last name in the front of the room. See you monday and have a good weekend (unlike last weekend when you were all studying for this exam and I was grading your quizzes)

Here are the exam statistics for everything we have taken so far. Note that each dot on the graph represents a person.
reminder: If you have not picked up a clicker and have not registered it successfully, please do so ASAP. There are 25 clicker points. If you miss those points you are getting a zero instead of nearly 25 clicker points (25 points is the same as a letter grade better on 2 exams).

Here are the answer key and blank forms of Quiz III. Once again it is best to print out all forms and treat these as homework problems which are directly related to the questions which you will get on Exam II. I have just barely separated out the different forms, reorganized the periodic tables and started grading. So far of the ones I have graded, it looks pretty good. Probably on Wednesday, I will come with the graded quizzes. The answer key will have on it common mistakes that you made on the quizzes and the points I took off for them so be sure to look at the answer key at the next class. posted by Dr. Hahn from her NMT office at 4:20 pm 10/3/11

There is an error in the answer key to the last question on form 9A (9 am class form A).
correction: for question # 7
32.5 g Al x (1 mol Al / 26.98 g Al) x ( 9 mol O / 1 mol Al) x (6.02 x 10 23 / 1 mol O) = 6.53 x 10 24 atoms O (the answer key says 6 mol O)
Please note that whenever I give an exam or quiz, I am returning nearly 200 graded exams/quizzes. When they are put out on the stage by first letter of last name, please be sure that you are picking up only your own exam or quiz (unless you arranged to pick up an exam on behalf of a friend with his permission). I have 2 people whose quizzes have "disappeared". I have those student's grades and I cannot imagine that between my recording their grades and me putting them out to be picked up in class, the quizzes somehow disappeared. The only explanation is that the student's quizzes must have been picked up by someone else. I also had one student who asked me for his exam in the "not yet picked up file", got me upset at the prospect of searching for a missing exam, and then found it at home. If one of your friends picks up your exam on your behalf, please check with them before we start a "search and rescue" for your missing graded exam / quiz.

Here is Quiz IV blank form and answer key. I haven't made much headway in grading your quizzes so the key does not have common mistakes and points on it. One point: what shows up on quizzes is what any chemist thinks are the majors points in the chapter material. Of course an exam is longer than a quiz so I will have the opportunity to put more stuff on the exam. Please remember that the exam will be about 1/3 multiple choice, 1/3 short answer (fill in the blanks) and 1/3 long answer. Good luck studying for the exam. [I was not aware of the pseudo homecoming this friday(because I am new) and I hope that the chemistry studying does not dampen your enjoyment too much but you can party after the exam (while I suffer through all that making up the exam and grading pain)] posted by Dr. Hahn from her NMT office at 4:50 pm on 10/14/11

Review session for Exam II (EII on 10/19W) will be on Monday October 17 from 5 to 7 pm in Workman 101 - During the review session, I will not tell you what will be on the exam. You will however get to ask me anything you want about any material which you think you need for the exam. (review session time decided by vote during class on M 10/10/11) I am doing this review session because before the last exam some of you had questions which I was not able to answer in the interest of finishing up material needed for the exam in a timely manner. You can ask me questions until you run out of questions to ask. Since I was not able to cover chapter 5 in time for you to digest it for Exam II, none of chapter 5 will be on Exam II. E II will cover chapter 3 starting from % composition (excluding calculating molecular formula-which was on EI) to all of the rest of chapter 3 and all of chapter 4. We will cover chapter 5 in one day but it will not be on Exam II. posted by Dr. Hahn at 11:30 am 10/14/11

Here are the most recent clicker question and answers for the clicker question. Also since I was not able to distribute the points & additional comments about Quiz IV because of copy machine issues, here it is. Q IV Pts & comments. Note once again that Exam II will cover only Chapter 3 starting from % composition until the end of Chapter 4. None of Chapter 5 will be on this exam although I covered chapter 5 today.
The exam will also be ~ 1/3 multiple choice, ~ 1/3 short answers and ~1/3 long answers and will have either one or two long answers on it. Please make sure that you know how to do every single question that showed up on both the 8 am and 9 am class QIII and QIV. Those are posted above. This does not mean that I will put the exact same question on the exam. It means you should understand how to do these types of questions because those are the most important points in these chapters (according to almost any chemist). Please come with calculators & ID. Good luck studying for Exam II.

exam stats updated 10/23/11 Sunday (not yet including Exam II) Please note that the midterm grade was based on QI, QII and EI. The grade did not include clicker points. The assumption was that both QI and QII counted and were not dropped (although of course you will be able to drop 2 quizzes). I also did not give a zero for unexcused absence quizzes and exams although the final grade will have zero grades for any quiz and exam that you missed. Of course if you have a valid excuse, we will follow the rules as stated in the syllabus. There are absolutely no make up quizzes. You will just get an average taking into account the difficulty of the quiz.
example: your missing quiz grade / your average on other quizzes = class average missing quiz / class' average on all quizzes
If you missed an exam with a valid excuse you may either take the average (as shown above) or you may request a makeup exam which will not be the same as the exam given to everyone else in class. If the exam is an unexcused absence, you will get a zero on the missing exam. The easiest way to get an F in the class is to miss exams and quizzes without a valid excuse.

Here is the Exam II key. As I announced in class on 10/26/11, please print out the key and bring it with you to class on Friday 10/28/11. I will return the graded exam and you can compare the key with your exam for points I counted off for common mistakes. This key is the key I would give to a grader if I was using a grader to grade your exams. I am not using a grader so you guys (my students) are going to help me make sure that I graded your exams correctly. If I made a mistake as always, you must let me know in writing before you leave the class on Friday. As always please make sure that I added up your points correctly. So MC is worth 30 pts, SA is worth 42 pts and LA is worth 28 pts. Add up all the negative points (for example for MC, lets say you lost 3 pts) and subtract from 30 (ex: 27pts). By the directions for MC, you will find 27/30 (or whatever you made). On the front of the exam you will find for example 1(name pt) + 27 + 40 + 26 = 94 which would be your grade. You should also make sure that you understand what you got wrong on this exam so that you don't make the same mistake on your next exam. No I won't put the same question on the next exam, but if you don't understand material on old exams and quizzes, you may not understand the next concept on your next exam.

Here is the information for this week's Spectra Lab. (Link removed per Dr. Altig's request.) No, I am not teaching the lab and I really don't need the extra work because I am already busy just teaching all of you. However since I did not cover the Rydberg Equation in the lecture and when I (who has a Ph.D in chemistry and already knows about the Rydberg equation) spent something like 6 hours figuring out the lab, I thought I had better help the class do the lab. note: When I went over Chapter 6 - I left the Rydberg Equation out because the Rydberg Equation only works for hydrogen and no other element. While the Rydberg Equation is historically significant in how people actually came up with the final quantum mechanics that everyone now uses, the amount of time that I would have spent covering the Rydberg Equation would have been a lot compared to the information that the class would have gleaned about what chemist usually expect you to be able to do after getting through General Chemistry. Also I wanted make sure that you did not spend an inordinate amount of time trying to figure out the excel plotting so I gave some pointers about that as well.
As soon as I am done grading your quizzes, I will post the answer key (with notes about points taken off for common mistakes). If I am not able to do it in enough time for the class to print it out before coming to class, I will just zerox the answer key to hand out with the graded quiz. The copy machine is no longer broken but I have been asked by the chemistry secretary to not copy so many pages. I think though since the quiz is only one page (as opposed to the 5 page exam), I don't think the Chem secretary will mind too much if I copy your answer keys. Since the quiz is all short answer and long answer, I do need you guys to keep me honest in the grading by actually having the answer key when I return your quizzes. I really also want to keep the rule that you only get to request a regrade during the class period when the quiz is returned instead of letting you request a regrade at any time. I don't want the quiz/exam grades to sort of be flexible. If I make too many errors which are not corrected immediately and if I have people making an adjustment in the graded quizzes long after the quiz / exam is returned, I am not sure that I can continue to give short answer/long answer quizzes and exams. I also think that multiple choice questions are testing recognition while short answer and long questions answer test knowing the material enough to be able to come up with an answer out of thin air.

Here is some useful information about the Molecular Modeling Lab. (link removed per Dr. Altig's request) I am providing this information because according to our syllabus, we are scheduled to begin that chapter on 11/9/11 W. We are also scheduled to start the Intermolecular Forces chapter on 11/30/11 W in a syllabus which evenly divided up all the chapters with the dates available. I don't have time to actually cover all this material in the midst of me covering other lecture material. I really recommend going into the lab this week with all of the Lewis Dot structures completely done so that you don't have to complete the lab at times other than the scheduled lab times.
A useful website for drawing your structures and looking at them in 3D is the website http://www.chemagic.com/vmk The website is free and you don't have to down load anything and you can draw your own molecule and view them in 3D. You can also move your 3D molecule around. (draw your molecule in the 3D editor site and upload your structure to the 3D viewer by clicking on Load 3D NIH) This website also has a very user friendly Youtube tutorials on how to use the website. It also have some preloaded molecules [click on options - use the preloaded MO menu - select molecule to view in 3D] You can move around 3D images and there is also a dipole option available drawing. (in the options menu, select under Dipole: either bonds or molecule to see the dipole arrows of either individual 2 atom dipoles or entire molecule vector sum dipoles respectively)
I will be doing another review session on 11/9 Wednesday from 5 to 7 pm to help your prepare for the Quiz VI on 11/11F and Exam III on 11/16 W. Please note that the syllabus is not a work in progress nor are the syllabus rules negotiable. So according to my syllabus, without a valid excuse, you will get a zero on quizzes and exams. If you have a valid excuse, read the part of the syllabus about excused absences for a detailed description of how valid excuses will be handled. Of course you are always welcome to run an excuse by me because I am a reasonable person and I will absolutely listen to you. The "valid excuse" rules are more flexible for just missing clicker points as opposed to missing an entire exam. If a documented illness is involved, I do not want you taking the exam or quiz with a burning fever or anything like that - there will absolutely be no illness penalty.
Here is today's clicker question.

Homework for Chapter 9: (in the homework put in "electron pair" in place of the words "electron domain")
9.17, 9.21, 9.23, 9.27, 9.31, 9.35, 9.39, 9.43, 9.49, 9.51, 9.53, 9.55, 9.69, 9.89, 9.94
QVI will cover Chapter 6 - electron configuration, Chapter 7 - periodic properties, Chapter 8-Lewis Dot structures (All material discussed in class is fair game. No material not discussed in class will be on the quiz or exam.)
Exam III will cover all of Chapter 5, 6, 7, 8 discussed in class. We will probably finish chapter 9 before Exam III but because we are covering a lot of chapters on this exam, we decided to not include Chapter 9 on Exam III.
The regular final exam will be given on 12/7 W. The regular format final exam will be cumulative and will cover chapter 1 through chapter 11. The regular format final exam will also be about 1/3 multiple choice, 1/3 short answer and 1/3 long answer. Because it will have to take an hour to complete the regular final exam, it will be a regular length exam. Because it is a lot of material, I will limit the MC parts to only come from the MC parts of Exam I, II and III + new MC from material since Exam III. (I will only be able to take maybe 3 to 5 MC questions out of each former exam.) One of the long answer questions will come from material covered since Exam III and one long answer question will come from a variation of a long answer question on Exam I, II and III. The long answer question (from Exam I,II, III) will not be the same identical question but will test the same understanding as tested on one of the long answer questions from Exam I, II, and III. Please note that all former exams (answer key and blank forms) are posted in the earlier parts of this website. Since we are exactly on schedule according to our syllabus, I am sure that we will finish chapter 11 by the final exam date. Our ACS final exam of course will cover everything (including things which we did not discuss in class) from General Chemistry I. The ACS final exam is completely all multiple choice. (Please note that this is what my syllabus says already - so no change from the syllabus.)

Let me state again, You are not (not, not, not, not, not) responsible for the lab help information. ******** security threat stuff below this line
Update: Please refer to the message at the end of the General Chemistry 121 Exams (click on above) document about Exam III originally scheduled for 11/16/11 Wednesday. I always post the most recent quiz/exam answer keys, clicker question answers, and lab help at the bottom of the General Chemistry 121 Exams document. posted by Dr. Hahn 11/14 M at 11 am from her NMT office
Update: Since I received email at 4:30 pm today stating that class tomorrow is optional because of the security threat, I have decided to cancel class tomorrow 11/11/11. I know I have been telling you that the quiz was on for tomorrow. I also did ask that you go to my website for more information. Although the University has not canceled classes since the university has made classes optional, I am going to go ahead and cancel both the 8 and 9 am General Chemistry I class (CHEM 121-01, CHEM 121-02) for 11/11/11. When we meet next on Monday (11/14), I will let the class decide whether you guys want to take the quiz on Monday and if moving the exam to the following Friday 11/18 is OK for you guys or not. We can move it to a later date if you want but if we do we will probably have to include chapter 9. We can discuss it on Monday. I don't really want to risk anything happening to anyone in class (knock wood, cross self). I apologize for the confusion.
Dr. Hahn posted at 5:30 pm 11/10/11 from her rented house 707 Neel Ave. with her TV on full blast
PS: I am also canceling the Organic Spectroscopy class (CHEM 544/444) for Friday 11/11/11.
If the General Chemistry class wants to go ahead and take the Exam on Wednesday (11/16/11) I can give you the exam on Wednesday. I don't care but whatever is best for the class, I will go with but I would really like to have the 8 and 9 am classes to take the exam on the same day. If you have some particular reason to request an exam time you can email me at jhahn@nmt.edu and request an exam time before we get to class on Monday.
*****
A few students have asked about what to do about the "security threat" scheduled for Friday in Socorro. Unless the university is closed and I get an official message that I am not to hold classes, classes will go on as scheduled. Note that we will have a quiz on that date. If you don't want to come to class because of the "security threat", I will treat it as an excused absence. We are following my written syllabus policy on missed exam and quizzes. An excused absence quiz will be replaced by a grade calculated by: QVI (your missing) / your own average on all other quizzes = QVI (class) / Q average (class on all quizzes) There will absolutely be no "make up quiz" given at any other time. Please note that if the university closes (on Friday), because I have to return your graded quizzes before the exam, we will have to move our QVI to Monday (11/14) and then we will have to move Exam III to Friday (11/18). Also please note that the quizzes are designed to help you do better on exams so even if you miss that class (& the university does not close on Friday) you should download the answer key for Q VI and make sure that you understand and can do any questions which show up on Quiz VI.

*********** above this section about security threat***
Here is lab help for the MO of metals and semiconductors lab (link removed per Dr. Altig's request) for this week. Please note: none of the lab help material will ever show up on any of the regular format exams. I seriously doubt that some of the esoteric stuff from the lab such as the theoretical calculation of the correct structure of PO4-3 and using some trig function to come up with a numerical dipole moment will ever show up on the standardized ACS exam either. However knowing that the best Lewis Dot structure (of a number of resonance structures) is almost always the Lewis Dot structure with no charge anywhere on the molecule is something that would likely show up on the ACS standardized exam (& also in organic chemistry class as well). ("Best Lewis Dot" structure is the structure closest to the actual structure of the molecule.)
Result of the canceled class on Friday 11/11/11: As you know we did not hold class on 11/11/11 because of the security threat. I heard from the news that in Socorro schools ( presumably K to 12) that only 5% of the students attended classes on Friday 11/11. So today (11/14 M) we went ahead and took the quiz scheduled for Friday. I asked for a vote of whether you wanted to take Exam III on Friday 11/18/11 or on Monday 11/21/11 and by a narrow margin the vote was to have Exam III on 11/21/11 Monday. Monday's exam will still cover all of chapter 5, 6, 7, and 8. None of Chapter 9 will be on this exam although we will probably be half way through Chapter 10 by then. If you have an issue coming to Exam III because of the change in schedule (beyond my control), please be sure to come to me with a hardcopy of the excuse which I will keep in my files. If possible you should run the excuse by me first to make sure that the excuse is a valid excuse. If you do not have a valid excuse and you miss any quizzes or exam, you will get a zero on the missing quiz or exam. Under no circumstances do I ever give an exam or quiz to a few people before I give the exam or quiz to the class as a whole. There are never any makeup quizzes (ever under any circumstances). If there is a a makeup exam, it will be given after I give the exam to everyone else in the class. Any makeup exam, will be very different from the exam that I give everyone else in class and will have to be arranged to be taken at a time convenient for myself and anyone needing the makeup. Please note because it takes me a solid 2 days to make up an exam, it would not be possible to take a make up exam immediately after you miss the exam (such as a few hours after everyone else has taken the exam or a day after everyone else has taken the exam) If you have a valid excuse, I will follow (to the letter) my policy on missed exams and quizzes as stated in my syllabus.

Here are the answer key and blank form of QVI. You should make sure that you understand (& can actually do) every question on this and QV before the exam. You will not get the exact same question on the exam that you got on the quiz but I am expecting that you can do everything that I put on the quizzes. (Of course this does not mean that you can ignore the rest of the lecture notes because material from the rest of the lecture notes and assigned homework problems will also be on the exams and quizzes.) A long answer question may turn into a short answer or multiple choice question and visa versa. I will probably not put one of the Hess's law questions on the exam because that takes a little too much time to do considering the amount of time that we have to do your exam. Our exam (originally scheduled on my syllabus to be on 11/16/11) has been moved to 11/21/11 Monday. This exam will cover Chapter 5, 6, 7, and 8. None of chapter 9 and 10 will be on this exam. The exam will cover only the material discussed in class and no material not covered in class will be on this exam. (no matter how much time the book spent covering the material). None of the lab help information will be on this exam. Exam III will be about 1/3 MC, 1/3 SA and 1/3 LA (there will be 2 long answer questions.)
There will be an extra help session so that you can ask anything you would like to ask about the exam material on 11/18/11 Friday from 5 to 7 pm (or until you run out of questions). If you need help, you can come and have me do every single question on the quiz or every single homework problem which I assigned or any point which was not clear to you. I also will clarify what kind of material will and will not be covered on the exam or quiz. I am however not telling some students or teaching assistants what I am going to put on the exam or quiz. I do not (I never have and I never will) have a small number of students taking the exam before everyone else takes the exam as a form of a makeup exam. I do not (I never have and I never will) give a makeup exam or quiz to people with the exact same exam or quiz that I gave everyone else after everyone else has taken the exam or quiz. So I do not give a quiz or exam 2 hours after I give a quiz or exam to the rest of the class. (because I would have to make up an exam which takes 2 days after everyone else takes the normal exam) I follow the policy as written on the syllabus and there is no other negotiation which changes that policy for anyone no matter who you are. I have one person who is emailed the quiz because they are doing an almost online class every Friday - I have documentation for that person.

One of you asked me to post the ELMO note from the review session (review session for exam on 11/18/11 from 5:00 pm to around 6:30 pm in Workman 101). Some of this was me going over stuff and some of it is answer to specific questions asked from your classmates who were there. Of course it doesn't have all of what I said in between writing stuff but here it is anyway. E:LMOReviewSessionNotes . See you at the exam - yes I was able to xerox the exam Friday - the chem copy machine was fixed by Friday afternoon. posted by Dr. Hahn on 11/19/11 Saturday from her 707 Neel Ave. rented house

Final Exam Information for the regular format final exam to be given 12/7W (note 1: as always only material discussed in class will be covered on the regular format final exam, note 2: none of the lab material even the lab material I discussed in class to help you do the lab will be part of this regular format final exam)
The regular format final exam will be given on 12/7 W. The regular format final exam will be cumulative and will cover chapter 1 through chapter 11. New material since Exam III are chapters 9,10 and 11.
The regular format final exam will also be about 1/3 multiple choice, 1/3 short answer and 1/3 long answer. Because you will only have an hour to complete the regular final exam, it will be a regular length exam.
Because it is a lot of material, I will limit the MC parts to only come from the MC parts of Exam I, II and III + new MC from material since Exam III. (I will only be able to take maybe 3 to 5 MC questions out of each former exam.) So MC will be a few questions (exactly the same identical questions) as the MC parts of Exam I, II and III (for your section - 8 am gets 8 am questions, 9 am gets 9 am questions). A few MC questions will be new MC questions covering chapters 9,10 and 11.
One of the long answer questions will come from material covered since Exam III (chapters 9,10 and 11) and one long answer question will come from a variation of a long answer question on Exam I, II and III. The long answer question (from Exam I,II, III) will not be the same identical question but will test the same understanding as tested on one of the long answer questions from Exam I, II, and III from either section's Exam I, II and III.
(Please note that this is what my syllabus says already - so no change from the syllabus except for the new information about the content of the regular format final exam.)

PS: As soon as I finish grading Exam III, I will post the answer key - probably sometime on Tuesday 11/29. You should print the answer key and come to class with the answer key to Exam III so that you can make sure that you can check your graded exam III for any grading errors.

Here is the supplement to the lecture about the ideal gas law. ; ) Please note that on the final exam, I will not ask you do derive any of the esoteric versions of the ideal gas law. You do have to memorize the regular old PV = nRT ideal gas law. If I ask a long answer question which needs one of the esoteric versions of the ideal gas law, I will provide you with the equation on the exam.

Here are the answer keys for Exam III. Please print out at least the answer key for your section and bring it to class on Wednesday 11/30 when I will return your graded exams without an answer key. Because of xeroxing limitations, I am no longer allowed to print out your answer keys when I return your exams.
posted by Dr. Juliet Hahn at 12:50 noon from her NMTech office sitting alone surrounded by your exams, I have not yet gotten around to eating lunch because I wanted to be sure to post your exam answer key so that the majority of you come to class with the answer key.

Here are the most recent clicker questions. (chapter 9 to chapter 10) Note that your quiz on Friday 12/2/11 will cover chapters 9 & 10 (up to Dalton's law of partial pressure). If any part of chapter 11 is included, it will be included as an extra credit questions since I will cover it during class on 12/2/11. I would not try to pre-study chapter 11 before I cover the material in class. Good luck studying for Q VII, the regular format final exam and the ACS final. posted by Dr. Hahn at 3:50 pm from her NMT office

Since we will not be covering the solids chapter, I thought that I would post some useful information. SupplementToLecture12-4-11 Note that since we will not be covering this chapter at all, you are not responsible for this information on the regular format final exam (& probably not even the ACS final exam). One of the websites is for a graduate class at Michigan State University.
More Info about Regular Format Final Exam: When I stated above that the same Multiple Choice questions (MC EI,EII, EIII) will show up at the final exam, please note that the question # and letter answer letter will be scrambled. Also since the Regular Format Final Exam is cumulative over Chapters 1 to Chapter 11, I will generally choose questions which are more of understanding rather than simple memorization. LA and SA will be different from the former exams although the questions will probably be rather similar. Since I made up all the exams and will also be making up the Regular Format Final Exam, I am one person and I find it hard to think all that much differently from day to day (even if I try to think differently), the questions will be rather similar.

SNOW DAY: Today all classes are canceled at New Mexico Tech because of the snow. Of course that means that our review session scheduled for today is canceled. I want you to get back your graded quizzes before your exam. Also because if I go ahead and try to give the exam on Wednesday half the people in class will come in on Wednesday not expecting an exam, I am going to have to move our regular format final exam date to Friday 12/9/11. (Our second final exam - the ACS standardized final will still be given on 12/13/11 8 am class at 1:30 pm, 9 am class at 9 am in Worman 101.) I am going to try to set up a help session on Wednesday from 4 to 6 pm to help you with the final exam. In any case you know that I am always on campus from at least around 9 am to at least 5 pm M to F (I usually go food shopping a little before 5 pm on Friday) and that I sit with my office door wide open whenever I am on campus. If you need to ask me about anything that you think will show up on the exam, you are always welcome to drop by my office and ask me questions.

I have posted the ELMO lecture notes at the library. There are lecture notes (starting from 10/10/11 M, I did not save the earlier ELMO sheets.) for both the 8 am and 9 am classes. The notes for the 2 classes are almost identical except that one of the classes is slightly ahead of the other class so people from either class can look at the other classes' lecture notes. Let's help each other by keeping the pages from the notes intact. The notes are numbered by page and section identification. To get the ELMO notes go the the front desk (big circulation desk as soon as you walk into the library) of the library and ask to see General Chemistry I Lecture Notes (from Dr. Hahn). They are in a folder (one for the 8 am class and one for the 9 am class). You can check them out for 2 hours at a time.

Here is the answer key (with points listed for common mistakes) for the regular format Final Exam. I will (with 95% probability) have the graded regular format final exams (thanks in part to the TAs help in grading the MC & adding up points + I spent all weekend grading your final exams at home) to return on Tuesday 12/13/11 (the day of the ACS final exam - regular final exams day according to the registrar). Please print out the answer key for the regular format Final Exam and bring it with you to the ACS final exam. You will be able to pick up your regular format final exam and examine it for any grading errors at the end of the ACS final exam - before you leave the room. As always you will have to leave everything (except for your ID, # 2 pencil, and calculator) in front of the room while you are taking the exam. Good luck studying for the ACS final and I hope everyone makes me look good and justifies your grades by doing well on it. See you Tuesday.

How Grades Are Calculated: (No the ACS exam is NOT 75 % of your grade) I am exactly following the syllabus for calculating your grade. The syllabus is a written agreement between you and me that I must honor. You can also trust in the integrity of your grade. Remember what matter is what you put on your exam. Nothing else (major, who you are, what you want to do, whether I like you or not) matters for calculating your grade
The graduate teaching assistants (Dan & Isaiah) are only grading the multiple choice part of the regular format final. For incorrect answers, they will actually write in the correct answer that you should have had. They may also help me add up the points. Each exam gets the points added up at least 2 times to ensure accuracy. (Actually this is the first time that the graduate students are helping me add up points and only the second time that I had any help on any portion of the grading at NMT.) I am however grading all short answers and long answers to ensure consistent partial credit. If there is a mistake on the SA & LA, it is entirely my fault. You will probably (90% certainty) get back your graded regular format final exam when you come to take the ACS final exam on Tuesday. I will try to post the answer key to the regular format final exam by Monday noon at the latest. You should print out the answer key and bring it with you to the ACS final exam. The reason that I post the answer key (with common points taken off for common errors) is so that if there is a mistake in the grading, you can help me by pointing it out. My syllabus does state that you need to make any requests for a regrade in writing before you leave the room on the day that you get back your exams. While I do not think anyone in this class would do this, I have zeroxed copies of former students who "adjusted" a graded exam and then requested a regrade in writing. This is why you need to print out the answer key and bring it with you when you get back your exams - so that you can check for grading errors.
EI (100 pts) + EII (100 pts) + EIII (100 pts) + Q total (drop 2 quiz grades) (100 pts) + Regular Format Final (100pts)
+ ACS Final Exam (75 pts) + Clicker pts (25 pts) = Your Total # pts
grade = [ Your Total # pts / 600 ] * 100 and then 90% & above A, 80% & above B etc.
